Method 1: Install WordPress Theme using Search Feature
NOTE: This method is generally used for unpaid themes that are available in the WordPress Themes directory.
The first thing you need to do is log in to your WordPress admin dashboard. After you have logged in, click the Appearance » Themes.
This will bring you to the theme page, click the Add New button on the top of the screen.
On the next screen, you will see a variety of most popular themes as default in WordPress. You can sort themes by its Layout, Features and Subject and filter according to Featured themes, Popular themes, Latest themes. You can also search for a specific theme in the search box.
In our case, we searched for the blogging theme IsleMag as our example for this tutorial. Go ahead and search by typing the name of the theme that you need. After that, you will see a single theme or a list of themes that met your criteria.
Once you see the theme that you have searched, bring your mouse on it, then you will see two buttons which are Preview button to view the actual appearance of the theme and ‘Install’ button to install the theme to your WordPress site. Let’s go ahead and click on Install button.
Next, you will see WordPress will now download and install the theme for you.
Once installed, the install button will be replaced with an ‘Activate’ button. Go ahead and click on Activate button.
That’s it! you’ve successfully installed and activated your first WordPress theme using search method. You can now customize it, by clicking on Appearance » Customize.
Method 2: Install WordPress Using Upload Feature
In this guide, we will be installing your theme using the Upload feature in your WordPress Dashboard. Before you can upload your theme, you first need to download or purchased a theme and download it to your computer in order to use this method.
Let’s put it that you are done downloading the theme that you have purchased from the source or commercial theme provider and it should be in a .zip file in order to install the theme.
Important: If you have purchased themes from different commercial sources it’s vital to check first the zip file to ensure that you choose the right .zip to be installed in WordPress. And also check if that theme has documentation that will guide you on how to use and customize your theme.
Note: This method is basically used for paid themes from commercial sources or theme providers. However, you can also use this method to install and upload FREE themes through WordPress.org external download.
Next, login to your WordPress admin dashboard and click on Appearance » Themes.
This will bring you to the theme page, like one of the screenshots below. Click on the Add New button.
After that, click the Upload Theme button on the top of the page. This will bring you to a new page with an upload link.
On the next screen, you will see a section Choose file button. Click the Choose File button to open up a window to browse your computer. Find and select the theme that you have just download from your computer and Click the Install Now button to install your theme.
Once installed, you will see an optional success message with a link to activate, preview and return to theme installer. Click on Activate to use your theme and complete the installation.
Congratulation! you have successfully installed you first plugin using upload method. You can now customize it, by clicking on Appearance » Customize.

Note: This method upload functionality is only available for self-hosted WordPress.org users. If you are using WordPress.com then you cannot see and use this option because WordPress.com has its limitation for functionality.
